It should work though I haven't tried myself.  How did it fail?  Was
the disk partitioned with fdisk? Is your ZIP drive shown in kernel
bootup message?

Hmm. -current snapshot may be needed now.  I'm planning to prepare it
later unless anyone else do.  Is anyone working on?
