The linuxppc site has some notes about arguments you can give to the OF
boot command to change screen settings. I got the impression that they
were processed by OF, but I can't be sure. I never got them to work on an
8500, but then I never got linuxppc to install either and didn't try very
hard.
(Haven't tried NetBSD either because I don't have a complete spare disk.)

Feasibility of a new signature is currently being evaluated.
