Ewwww! This is *foul*.
Faking up a trivial HFS with a boot selector in it would be much less
awful, IMHO.
I mean, this way lies the "why don't we just run from a FFS vnd on
FAT or NTFS" madness. Sure, it's easy to do. No, there is just no good
reason I can see to add Yet Another Layer and chop off that extra
bit of performance just to avoid getting the boot process right for
a particular platform.
As an install-time option for people who can't or don't want to
repartition their drives, that's one thing. As the solution for
the general case, it's quite another.
