I am sure you know what your mistake was.  You want:

setenv output-device ttya
setenv input-device ttya

(you want to send both input and output to the same tty)

To reset the Open Firmware to the defaults, try:

Hold down command-option-p-r.  Power on.  Continue to hold down
command-option-p-r until the machine makes the startup bong sound 3 or 4
times.

If that doesn't work, try:

Power machine off.
Unplug machine from AC electricity power.
Unlock and slide open rear panel of machine.
You will see the motherboard.
On the motherboard is a battery inside a plastic clip.
Remove battery.  Pay attention to which side is + and which is -
Leave machine alone for 15 minutes. VERY IMPORTANT.
Replace battery.
Plug machine into AC electricity power.
Power machine on.
