I'm trying (and failing so far) to install NetBSD/macppc 1.5.2 on a
Beige G3 mini tower with Open Firmware 2.4. Following the install
instructions I downloaded the CD image and burned it to a CD with
Toast under Mac OS. I used SystemDisk to set the machine to stop at
the Open Firmware prompt, set real-base and load-base (even though
the default for load-base was already 600000), reset-all and tried to
boot.
My first problem was that I couldn't get the computer to read the CD.
After getting a few "can't OPEN" messages when I typed in the wrong
device name, I figured out the CD was at "ide1/disk@0:0". Using the
boot command "boot ide1/disk@0:0,OFWBOOT.XCF NETBSD.MACPPC" all I get
back is "unrecognized Client Program format state not valid".
I've been trying all sorts of other things. I browsed through the
mailing list for possible solutions, and I found some suggestions for
trying different values for load-base, but that didn't work. I also
tried writing a pure iso9660 format CD. That worked a little better.
I can get the computer to read the CD and load OFWBOOT.XCF, but it
always stops after this:
0 > boot ide1/disk@0:0,OFWBOOT.XCF NETBSD.MAC
loader: loading XCOFF
tsize=C1C0 dsize=1500 bsize=1680 entry=600000

So what am I doing wrong?
