Some progress.  If I specify "media 10baseT-FDX" i can get full-duplex. 
  However, as before I get absolutely crappy recieve speeds.  20K/s to 
200K/s max or so.  Sending isn't quite so bad.  I can manage 600 to 
800K/s.  I've more testing to do with different NIC's and etc.  I'll 
keep everyone posted.
