Sounds like wsdisplay didn't attach properly for some reason. Otherwise the OF font wouldn't even be available. Do virtual consoles work? Not that I'm aware of --I've never used them before. With wscons=yes in rc.conf I press any combination of Command-Option-F1 (or F2 ...) and nothing happens (even if combined with Shift, Control, Escape).
Command-F1..4 should do the trick, additional keys won't help, quite the opposite actually.. On more recent PowerBooks that might be difficult if you set OSX to control brightness, audio volume and such without pressing the Fn key. In this case you'd have to use Fn-Command- F1..4. This combination is tricky though, for reasons only known to Apple and the funny way how the keyboard presents itself as two ADB devices ( the normal keyboard and the brightness/audio/etc. buttons ). What usually works is to press and hold Command first, then Fn-F1..4.
Also, you can try to send text to /dev/ttyE1 - if you get 'device not configured' you don't have virtual consoles.
