And something new to add (though completely unsurprising): With xdm=YES (and just leaving xdm at the login prompt after booting up), if I try `shutdown -r now` in a pts, I get: System shutdown time has arrived About to run shutdown hooks... Stopping cron. Stopping inetd. Waiting for PIDS: 342. Stopping xdm. Waiting for PIDS: 250 .... At which point the system hangs.
