PowerBook 5,8 and keyboards

Hi,

I have a powerbook 5,8 (15" G4 with dual layer drive, one of the last
G4s).  

With no USB keyboard attached it crashes with a machine check
when prompted what shell to use when rc.conf is not configured.

With a keyboard attached it comes up fine.

The INSTALL kernel works correctly as well.

The screen capture looks like (hand typed):

alas the keyboard is non-functional so I can't get a traceback.

Has someone seen this?
