This didn't work. I did the patch last night and built a whole release
from release-5 code, but it still won't boot a regular kernel. I still
need to boot the one hardcoded to wd0a.

Did you have the same problem and then the patch solved it? Which
machine are you using? Mine is this one:

I had high hopes for this. Booting a bootloader from another device is
inelegant, but I've had to boot machines worth half as much as my
house this way so it's not unheard of. Having someone do this as a
workaround to a properly configured disk isn't as bad as not being
able to boot off a single disk at all.
