768 megs is not weird, it's just probably 512 + 256 in some combination.

Did you try the example boot command from the install document?:

ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-5.0.1/macppc/INSTALL.html#Examples%20of%20Open%20Firmware%20boot%20commands

This one:

0 > boot cd:,\ofwboot.xcf netbsd.macppc

I don't think this will make any difference, I think the bootloader
eventually looks for this netbsd.macppc kernel, but it's worth a try.

Also, have you tried any other versions? Maybe an iso from a current
build, like this one:

Is it possible to try netbooting a regular kernel just to see if it boots?
