I hope I'm not talking out of turn here, but the kernel config has an
Altivec option:

andy@dockstar2:~/src/netbsd/src/sys/arch/macppc/conf$ grep -i altivec GENERIC
options         ALTIVEC         # Include AltiVec support

What if you disable it?
