Confusion with a command line

I'm a bit confused with the following command line setting up the NFS server:

# tar [--numeric-owner] -xvpzf
/export/client/NetBSD-release/binary/sets/kern.tgz

What is this kern.tgz file? It represent the netbsd-GENERIC_MD.gz kernel file?
