You are right. I've cross-compiled a new ofwboot.{xcf,elf} on my (amd64) 
laptop, and it gives the same result. For completeness, this is what 
happens:

(It doesn't matter whether I try to use ofwboot.xcf or ofwboot.elf, and 
whether I boot POWERMAC_G5 or POWERMAC_G5.MP, the result remains more or 
less as above).
