Well, it appears that there's a different problem here than I thought.
It just booted the second time I tried it!  Curious, I did some
experimenting and figured out that if you use "reboot", the machine
comes back in a bad state and hangs before the root is mounted.  If
you physically reset the machine instead, it comes up fine!

Probably the SCSI controller isn't being properly reset at shutdown
time and you come around with it wedged the second.
