I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but my 
/dev/klog had the wrong major minor numbers.  It had
Major 0, Minor 7.  It should be Major 7, minor 0.

This caused syslogd on my machine to swipe all input
characters from getty and I could not login on my
console.

Check out yours and make the change if it has the wrong
numbers.
