I think it's mostly a matter of testing for the precense of features,
e.g.:
cache extended
2040 no no
2050 yes maybe
2060 yes yes
2065 yes yes
An extended 2050 looks much like a 2060, but maybe the microcode
version was different, or something. The 2065 had a larger microcode
store, so again maybe check the microcode version.
alt.sys.pdp10 may be a source of information on exact machine
identification.
