I've not used X on my pmax yet, but here's some general hints that
may help.

    Check that there's a fonts.dir in each of your font
    directories - run 'mkfontdir' if there isn't.  Maybe
    even try using the orignal directories - /usr/X11R6/...
    (if they or some symbolic links exists).

    Try starting the X server with something like:

	/usr/X11R6/bin/Xdec -fp <path to font dir>

    and see if that's any better.

Isn't the fixed font built in to the server?
