Hi guys,

Very bad news. I have been very busy in the last couple of months with
work and was just now going to try to finally install NetBSD on my Pmax.

I haven't had my Pmax running for a couple of months now, and when I
tried to boot it the other day, I found my RZ55 disk to start having
problems.

The following is just with trying to boot Ultrix 4.4:

It started out with:

RZ55 spins up fine when I power up the expansion unit.
Power up main unit, passed all tests,
typed "boot -f rz(0,0,0) vmunix" (I only have one SCSI disk, a RZ55 at
SCSI ID 0).

This worked just fine before, but what happeneded now, was the one click
you normaly hear at system bootup when the heads engage became many
clicks. The drive would click every couple of seconds till the console
timed out trying to access the kernel image.

At this point, I was often able to get the drive to spin up if I powered
everything down and back up.

But now this doesn't work and moreover, I get to the point of
boot -f rz(0,0,0)vmunix, and the drive clicks once and then I hear what
sounds like a rubbing noise. Shortly thereafter the console times out.
Powering it down and back up doesn't help.

To you DEC drive guru's out there: Is there any hope for this drive?
