Okay. It turns out that if I strip an Ultrix /vmunix kernel, the
stripped Ultrix kenrel won't tftpboot either.

Gregory, could you try stripping your Ultrix /vmunix (under ultrix)
and tftpbooting the stripped binary?  Does it work, or fail the
same way as  netbsd.ecoff and tftpboot?
