Ok, I figured out why X wouldn't start for non-root. (The /tmp dir was
not world writable) My next question is this:

  Why, despite my best efforts, can't I get the up and down arrow keys to
autorepeat. Everyother key works fine, INCLUDING the left/right arrow
keys.

  It's really annoying. Help. :-)
