As Wolfgang explained to me, the default catch is because of a flaw in
Apple's Open Firmware implementation. I have an idea or two to get around
it, but I can't cross-compile a new kernel until drow.net revives -
hopefully within a few days....
If any of my efforts are even partly successful, trust me, I'll let you all
know.
