thank you for your help. I have verified the ffs build. I am using the 
floppy image which is part of the sandpoint tree. The makefiles do about 
the same thing as your shell script does.

After some more digging I found one problem when the RTC clock is 
accessed. This normally happens at the end of the ffs_mount procedure. 
Now the mount seems to suceede. But then I ran into the next trouble. At 
the end of the kernel boot process /sbin/init is called. But this again 
runs into a trap (see my next posting).
