Ok, that's definitely unrelated - there's not a single VIA chip in my  
G4 ;)

Anyway, I found out by accident ( didn't build a DIAGNOSTIC kernel  
for a while ) that IPIs tend to time out occasionally, that may be  
the real root of the problem. I'll look into that when the G4  
finished its fsck dance - it's really time we get journalling ffs.
