I think "The Magic Garden Explained" describes System V Release 4 with 
special focus on the low-level details on MIPS.

I cannot really recommend any hardware, due to lack of experience.
Why not get something small like a Meshcube or one of these Linux-capable 
Linksys routers and start porting? :)
