First off, let me explain my full HW/SW:
Hardware:
SPARCstation ELC
Sun CDROM
Micrapolis 669MB disk
Archive 150MB QIC
Telebit T2500 connected with modem cable, not an A/B splitter.
Software:
TDR2 precompiled /netbsd, 24 April 1993
Kermit 5A(189) 30 June 1993, 4.4 BSD
To force a hang:
- Buy, beg, borrow or steal a Telebit* T2500 modem.
- Go thru Kermit to ttya. Use hardware flow control.
(I can't use software flow because I'm a JOVE user)
Make sure you're not in PEP mode (where trailing
garbage is discarded).
- Dial in to your favorite site.
- Read news or do some other high-volume transfer until
the kernel complains of "zs0a: silo overflow".
- Preferably, make this happen more than once during the
session.
- logout from the remote site. Let finishing garbage
mess up your screen.
- If you can still type at the modem, repeat the process.
- Otherwise, you are now hung:
- Type ^\-H to force kermit to hang up. It will report
"Hanging up...".
- Hit your interrupt key. Kermit will return to the
prompt. Type "quit". Your terminal is now hung.
- Alternatively, type a Control-Z and "kill %". You will
not be able to kill the process.
If you cannot make this happen, maybe it's peculiar to the SLC/ELC
hardware. If you can make this happen, let me know what solution you
achieve.
Notice: It may take a while, or it may not, for the overflow to happen
-- it seems to be spurious, and I suspect it happens around the 64K
boundary of passed characters (packets?).
If I have omitted something, let me know.
