I will bet that nntpd wants to get at the kernel to look up the current
system load average, in order to do load limiting. If you want the kernel
access code to go away (because it's clearly not right for NetBSD), I'd
find the #ifdef in the configuration file that deals with load limiting,
and shut it off.

of course, it's been a while since I had my fingers in that code...
