In the past I've heard reports of that hot-plugging a transceiver can
blow the AUI power fuse, probably due to inrush current.  I suspect that
newer tranceivers are less likely to cause this, since they generally
draw less power than the really old ones.

That said, I've done it and not gotten burned, though your mileage may differ.
