FWIW, I'm seeing something VERY similar when I run the server with -auth .
(I don't use xdm, but the setup I'm using works fine under StunOS)
I can't get *ANY* clients to connect successfully, and wind up having to
log in from another machine just to kill X.

(this is on a Sparc 2, 1.2_BETA circa 3 july, using the X11R6 from
NetBSD.org about 4-5 months ago.)
