Subject: 1.2G/-current can't find disk/file-system

After futzing with this for a couple of weeks now, I'm resorting to
asking what is wrong with this picture:
I boot a locally built -current (1.2G) GENERIC kernel on a Sparc-1
It finds the scsi disk (sd0) and reports:
root on sd0a dumps on sd0b
no file system for sd0 (0x700)
cannot mount root, error = 79
If I give it "ffs" for the file system, it reports
cannot mount root, error = 6
So what am I (or is it) doing wrong? (I'm assuming pilot error rather
than a bug for now; ergo, no bug filed.)
Thanks.
