Argh.  Now disklabel gives me the error even when total disk size is
below 2 GB:

disklabel: ioctl DIOCWDINFO: Label magic number or checksum is wrong!

WHAT am I doing wrong??

Six hours labeling one stupid disk.. no ideas left :-(
