Ken,
in your resolv.conf do you have more than one line for
the "search" keyword? It shouldn't, but it did, cause havoc
for me for a few days.
Do:
search blah.blah blah2.blah2
Don't:
search blah.blah
search blah2.blah2
Let me know if this was it, I'm interested to know.
