i whine about this every once in a while, but nobody listens to me. :)
anyway, i got away with booting into single user mode, and i had to hit it
kinda hard with a 5 pound sledge and now it works great. if you have alternate
media to boot from (net, cd, tape, etc) boot from that, mount your root slice
somewhere, and edit /etc/fstab to point to sd1, reboot.
now your computer works.
