On machines with a serial port that uses a Mini DIN-8 you can solve this 
problem by plugging in a 4.7K resistor from pin 2 to pin 5.  I use that fix 
to keep several Sparc IPCs and an IPX logged on headless with no connection 
to the serial console port (machines connected to the outside world through 
the ethernet port alone).  The pins for equivalent signals on serial ports 
with other pinning should work as well.  The phenomenon of the machine 
logging out is explained in some detail in the article at
