Well this is more of an FYI type...
I used sysinst to load 1.5.2, via ftp, onto my LX. Everything seemed to go
okay, once I put in the correct IP address for my box :-/ I noticed 2
differences from sysinst for port-Alpha...
1. Did not set Time Zone
2. Did not set root password
While not terribly important, they are good things to have. Otherwise one
may not remember to do that later...

!
! So, here's the process, as far as I understand it...
!
! I tweak the OpenBoot PROM with these commands...
! > n
! ok setenv sunmon-compat? false
! ok
! ok setenv security-mode none
!
! The I rawrite, and boot from the two floppies, and use
! "sun-cgsix" as the termianl type, right?
!
! I'll probably select to load everything, including X, which
! should fit on my 2.1GB HDD.
!
! "Now try a reboot. Initially we'd suggest you boot sd()netbsd
! -bs, then try multiuser after that. If you boot single-user
! the NetBSD incantation to make the root filesystem writable is
! # mount -u /dev/sd0a /
!
! Your PROM might have been setup to instruct the boot program
! to load a file called vmunix. On OpenBoot PROM systems you
! can change it to load netbsd instead using the following commands:
!
! - OpenBoot PROM 2
! ok setenv boot-file netbsd
! ok setenv boot-device disk:a
! ..."
!
! I saw a note to add /usr/X11R6/bin to my path in my shell's
! dot file, so that I can access the X binaries.
!
! Then just add FVWM2 from pkgsrc, and be good to go. Then copy
! the stuff you mentioned from the SunOS HDD. Just need apps
! after that, right? Or am I better off, space-wise, to use the
! precompiled binaries in the package system?

! !
! ! Well, if you want to run Netscape, that'd be a Solaris
! ! binary. :-) You'd run
! ! the Solaris version under emulation. Unless you're thinking
! ! of compiling
! ! Mozilla, which would take days.
! !
! ! I'd probably just tar/gzip the original drive so then you
! ! only have a single
! ! file to write to CD. You could use mkisofs to make an ISO
! image of the
! ! drive, as well. mkisofs isn't included with Solaris, but you
! ! can certainly
! ! find installable packges on sunsite.unc.edu's ftp site under
! ! /pub/solaris/freeware.
! !
! ! X is -easy- to get running -- there's really nothing to
! ! configure. Unlike
! ! XFree86, the console of a sunbox is -always- graphical, so X
! ! requires no
! ! configuration whatsoever to get the server to come up. What
! ! you do with it
! ! after that, though... :-)
! !
! ! I don't know much about gnome, as I'm a KDE fan myself. On an
! ! LX though, I
! ! probably wouldn't run either. The onboard cgsix on the LX
! ! will only do 8-bit
! ! color, and KDE or GNOME would be hard to use in that. The
! ! CPU's a little
! ! slow for a bulky windowmanager too... Might be better off
! ! just using FVWM2
! ! which doesn't require much in the way of CPU and is very
! ! configurable -- not
! ! hard to get it to look the way you want it to. Comes with
! ! some interesting
! ! sample configs, etc. It's installable out of the NetBSD
! ! packages collection.
! !
! ! HTH.
