Then that's different from my understanding of how the
previous implementation worked. I'll have to think about the
implications of this to see if there are any weaknesses I can

But you do have to unmount and remount the filesystem. Since
tunefs only works on unmounted (or read-only) filesystems, I don't
see any practical difference here.
Moreover, your changes don't survive reboots, whereas with
tunefs they would.
IMO, there would still appear to be disadvantages to using
mount instead of tunefs.
