Thanks for the data point - isn't the LX a sun4c ?  Does that matter?
Try building your kernel without -m*.

Interestingly all the pkgs I've built were done with -mcpu=v8
and work find on the classic.  Kernels built with that setting worked
fine on the SS20 too (1.5ZC was last one)
