yes there is POST (Power-On Self Test).  i am not sure whether you have
OBP 1.x od 2.x and i can speak only about 2.x:

 ok setenv diag-switch? true
 ok reset

and watch POST messages after reboot on your serial console.

there are also some test commands like 'test-all', 'test-mem' (or test
/memory) which you get by typing 'help test' in OBP.  hope this helps.

2.x and 3.x series:
