Yesterday I suspected a failing hard drive after I got two different 
errors on two attempts to compile the same package.
Last night I tried to install Gentoo Linux and it hung twice while 
trying to untar the base system on the hard drive. I'm pretty confident 
that all this mess is caused by the bad hard drive - I will try 
replacing it and give another go with NetBSD.
