I don't think so, assuming the drive supports single-ended operation. I had
the following working fine in an SS5/170 (running NetBSD 2.0):
sd0 at scsibus0 target 3 lun 0: <NETAPP, X243_FAL7E073S10, NA00> disk fixed
sd0: 70092 MB, 29902 cyl, 8 head, 600 sec, 512 bytes/sect x 143550456 sectors
sd0: sync (100.00ns offset 15), 8-bit (10.000MB/s) transfers, tagged queueing

The drive is a Fujitsu MAN3735MC (10,000rpm, Ultra 160 LVD) with NetApp firmware.
