Hi Paul, just to throw in another suspect.

Is anything nfs mounted?

I Have a nice compaq server sitting here, which sometimes decides to do 
some rest (1/2 h or so)  before  it gets back to work.
This issue is nfs related, so I wounder where your pkgsrc lives?
