Keep in mind that the problem i'm seeing has only occurred on a machine
running two 50 MHz cpus and an MP 3.1 kernel.  One 50 MHz CPU works OK
with the same MP kernel.  So on a single-CPU SPARC-5, i would not expect
to see the problem.
