What kind of CPUs do you have and does your machine boot an SMP kernel with
3.0 or 4.0? There was a regression [1] between 2.0 and 3.0 that prevented
machines with SM50s (cacheless, 50Mhz) booting an SMP kernel. I'm not sure
if it's been resolved.
