Sounds like that could be the case.
Some posts ago in this thread you mentioned the drive beeing round
about 1GB, and no OS beeing present on that very machine. So it is an
old drive and was not in use for quite some time?
Old HDDs tend to have some trouble starting up the spindle due to
resinous lubricants, especially if they just sat around a while. Of
course, a drive damaged that way still respondes to "probe-scsi" and
will be detected by the kernel, cause the electronics are still at
service. But it can't be brought up, since the disk ist not rotating.
Can you hear the spindle turning?
