space for basic installation - hang

Hi,

while upgrading my IPC, I get out of space during base extraction.

tar: Failed write to file ./lib/libc.so.12.220 (No space left on device)

Yet before, on my / partition I have around 600MB free. I also tried 
installing only base sets, thinking to install X11 later...

I tried a trick to set the transfer directory on my home, which is a 
separate partition, but apparently helped on ly partially.

It worked for one or two hours, then at

just stayed this way, no progress... no update, no answer on Ctrl-C.
However, being on serial console, no kernel message ore anything else!

I did a reboot and retried from scratch. Syncing disk. did freeze! so I 
fear something at the disk-level did hang.

I get again a "no space left on device error"... in kern-GENERIC

As a test, I opened the shell from the installer, mounted both disks as 
the installer does, I get:

something looks fishy. I just left it running.... Skipping packages, all 
give such errors.


If I try and retry.... the diskspace remains, but extractions has errors.

Filesystem issues fsck doesn't detect? out of inodes even with such a 
standard installation?
