This has been my test as I run through things.  Dropping to shell from the utility menu and trying newfs by hand.  Just gives me a segfault and no other useful info.

The root disk (before the installer touches it) is literally just 8G of zeroes courtesy of dd.

One other thing to throw out - this machine currently has a “modern” NVRAM 48T02.  So I believe this has the extra century value which makes the machine not POST and complain.  It boots manually and runs though.  Could this cause something like this ?

I should have an actual vintage NVRAM in my possession in about a week.  I have a glitchwrks retrofit coin cell kit I plan on installing on it.  But as of right now I only have this “semi compatible” NVRAM for sun4c.
