I never saw the problem (and I'm booting my U5 from disk).

Frank van der Linden reported failure of pciide to detect wc* once, but it
went away after power cycling. I'm not sure this is the same problem as seen
on Macs where some versions of OpenFirmware leave the pciide controller in
an unusable state.
