SHMMAXPGS sets the amount for memory available via or to SYSVSHM.
i had to recompile a kernel for www/php4-apc (a PHP caching tool), so
it's not that uncommon.

i never tried squid on Solaris, but for the other OSes you might see
they're less optimized -- or, to see it from a different perspective,
not that resource-friendly as NetBSD is :)
