better use 'sun' as terminal type, 'sun-ss5' is a cut-down version suitable for the old console code if I remember correctly.

So the keyboard code is still not fixed - please try one of my kernels ( made for an U10, should work for you ) - this is what I'm using right now - the only difference is that it contains vt100 terminal emulation code instead of sun:

Good question - what's in your /var/log/XFree86.0.log? This should tell us why the Xserver barfs.
