I suspect that a vt220 is configurable to send ^H or ^? when the 'obvious'
key is pressed. IIRC the vt100 was.
Also all the world isn't vt220.
A UK 101-key PC keyboard actually sends 0x0e when the 'backspace' key
is pressed. This gets converted to an ascii code by software.
